Title: Multicultural Music

Goals: Students will understand the diversity of the world they live in and the importance of accepting all people in that world. Students will explore 1 of 6 types of multicultural music and report to the class the information they researched.
Objectives:
1. Students will interpret a cartoon using complete sentences and organized thoughts.
2. Students will listen and analyze two pieces of music from other countries using videos on the internet.
3. Students will research 6 facts on their assigned country’s music using the internet.
4. Students will create a power point presentation with a group that contains 5 facts per person using prior knowledge learned in computer class.
5. Students will present 5 facts per person to the class using proper vocal tone, eye contact, and confidence.
Overview:
This lesson is designed for a 6th grade general music class. Using a teacher created website, students will research world music from one of 6 cultures – India, Indonesia, Middle East, Caribbean, Western Africa, and Native American. The students will be working in the computer lab section of their classroom. Teacher will be utilizing the smart board to show students how to navigate through the site and get the required information. This project will take 3 class periods to complete the project and 2 class periods to present the researched information.
Outline of Classes:
Day 1 – Students will be introduced to the website (www.esu.edu/~jlm3793/multicultural_music) and google docs. Students will analyze the meaning of a cartoon and write their responses in google docs. Students will then discuss responses with one another. Students will be assigned 1 or 6 countries. They will watch videos that contain examples of music from their assigned land and answer questions about what they heard in google docs.
Day 2 – Students will read articles on their country’s music and choose 6 facts to type into their Google Docs document. Students will collaborate with other students in their group and begin creating a power point presentation.
Day 3 – Students will complete any research they need to complete and finish their power point presentations. Students will discuss how they will organize their presentation to the class.
Day 4 – 3 of the 6 groups will present their researched information. Groups will respond to student and teacher questions that the class can ask at the end.
Day 5 – The last 3 groups will present their researched information. Groups will respond to student and teacher questions that the class can ask at the end.
Assessment: The teacher will visually and aurally assess the student’s presentations using the project rubric.
